Welcome to Te Whare Whānau – Motueka Maternity Unit, a calm, midwife‑led birthing and postnatal space where wahine and whānau are supported to birth and connect with their new  pēpi in a way that feels safe, respectful and right for them.

Te Whare Whānau is grounded in manaakitanga, whanaungatanga and mana wahine, honouring birth as a normal and powerful life event and recognising the importance of culture, choice and connection.

Where can you find us?

Te Whare Whānau – Motueka Maternity Unit is based in next to the Jack Ingles Hospital in Motueka and serves whānau from Motueka and surrounding Nelson Tasman area.

It is a primary, midwife‑led maternity unit, separate from a hospital obstetric environment, designed to feel calm, private and welcoming — a space that supports birth, rest and bonding.

We warmly welcome wahine and whānau to visit Te Whare Whānau – Motueka Maternity Unit before their baby arrives.

Tours are available:

  • Monday to Friday

  • 9.00am – 5.00pm

Please call ahead to book a time, so we can make sure a midwife is available.

One of our pūkenga māmā (midwives) will be happy to show you around the unit, answer your questions and help you decide if Te Whare Whānau feels right for you and your whānau.

He pai tonu te kite, te rongo, te pātai hoki — it helps to see the space, feel the environment and ask questions in person.

This option may not suit you if…

  • You require specialist obstetric or medical care during labour or birth

  • You are wanting medications for pain relief in labour

  • If you can't birth at Te Whaua Motukea Maternity unit you may be able to come to us after your pepi is born.

If your needs change, your midwife will support you and help arrange the right care — your safety and wellbeing are always the priority.

Who can access Te Whare Whānau?

Labour and Birth

Te Whare Whānau is available to wahine who are planning a midwife‑led birth and whose pregnancy is progressing well. Your Lead Maternity Carer (LMC) midwife will talk with you about whether this unit is the right place for you to birth, based on your individual needs and circumstances.

Afterbirth care – Manaaki i muri i te whānautanga

Te Whare Whānau – Motueka Maternity Unit is available to support wahine and whānau after pēpi is born, regardless of where the birth takes place.

Anyone can access the unit for afterbirth care.
If you birth at home or at Nelson Hospital, you may transfer to Te Whare Whānau once you and your pēpi are discharged from hospital.

This includes mothers who have had:

  • Planned (elective) caesarean sections, or

  • Emergency caesarean sections

  • Difficult births

  • Pepi who have needed special care after birth (SCBU)

As a team, we work together to support the transition to parenthood, providing a calm, supportive and nurturing environment where you can rest, bond with your baby and gain confidence.

Our focus during your stay is to:

  • Support you and Pepi with feeding

  • Support bonding with your Whaunu and new Pepi

  • Partners and support people are welcome to stay with you

  • One chosen support person will be provided with meals during your stay with you.

  • You Whanau are welcome to visit at a time that works for you

  • Support your physical recovery and wellbeing

  • Help you feel confident caring for yourself and your pēpi before going home

Ko te whānau te mea nui — you and your baby are at the centre of care.
We work alongside you so that when you leave Te Whare Whānau, you feel supported, informed and ready for the next stage of your journey.

This birth option is for you if…

  • You are having a well pregnancy and are over 37 weeks pregnant when you go into labour

  • You would like a calm, low‑intervention birth setting

  • You would like to have a water birth or labour in water

  • You have a Lead maternity carer who supports you to birth at Motueka Maternity unit.

  • You want your whānau involved in your birth experience
