Kirsty Fernandes - Honouring Mama

About

I am the lucky wife to Duane and Māmā to two children aged 3 and 5.

I found myself a little lost on the other side of birth after our daughter. We had prepared so diligently for birth but I had no idea what I needed to do to nourish, nurture and heal myself post-birth. It struck me that we are so focused on the birth of a baby that we forget that a mother is born on that fateful day as well (regardless of how many babies she already has).

The more I spoke to other Māmā, the more I realised that we all needed our stories to be heard and time to heal emotionally, physically and spiritually after birth. This was further reinforced for me when I became pregnant with my second child and all of my feelings from my first pregnancy and birth resurfaced, still waiting to be processed! It became clear to me that it was so important to journey through all of my emotions in a safe space, so that I could progress through my second pregnancy liberated from my first, ready to learn what I needed to from the unique experience of my second child. Knowing this and wanting to support Māmā and their whānau is where Honouring Māmā was born from.
